0:00Festival preparation at 20 versus now
With DMT you want to get like at least 3 good hits to really blast off. And so the 3rd hit that I take, I go into it. Welcome to the Q&A episode of the Two Fun Guys Multiverse podcast. So you guys have written in a couple of your questions to us. We're just gonna go through the list and have at it. So, are you ready? Yep. Now he's licking his lips like he's like a salamander. OK, first question. How did you festival when you were 20 versus now? Uh, I didn't prepare at all physically. What does that mean? Like, I didn't give any thought into, should I not work out the day before, or like how much stress. I think just in general as you get older, you like start calculating all the amount of stress, and then like this thing you gotta go do, you're like, OK, so this was a tough week at work. I probably gotta go sauna. And then I should probably get a little more sleep or whatever, right? So, for example, like we're gonna go to Shambala. I'm like, OK, the week be like I'm, it's a month away, so like preparing now in my head. I'm like, OK, you gotta get your shit dialed in, your sleep getting better, right? Because The more responsibilities you have, which naturally should happen as you get older, the more you just have to be on physically, mentally, all these things for friends, business, all this stuff, and it falls apart more because you're just less resilient in some ways. Yeah, when you're 20 you can fall off the, you know, a roof and just jump up and you're fine. Yeah, I can't, and I also have to like think about the state of stress and then the substances I take in combination.
1:44Treating festivals as ceremony
And if I'm overworked, And you're managing a bunch of stuff and you're mentally stressed or physically stressed, and then you go into a four-day festival, you don't think about it, those are the people you see. Leave on stretchers. Those are the people that are just like, bloop, I just do things and I don't think about it and then they have, they're the people freaking out. Oh no, it's the consequences of my actions back again, freaking out. I think slowly from the beginning. As I got till now, from the beginning of festivaling till now, I treat festivals as like a ceremony, in the sense that it's a time to like reconnect to play, fun. Get creative insights, kind of be reflective, like when you're on the dance floor and say you're on psychedelic substances of some sorts, like, it is like a ceremony, right? It's like you're in this deep kind of like trance state where you're kind of like reflecting on things and things come to you, right? And Using it as like a way of coming back to center and then bringing that realigned, happy, fun, joyful new insight self back into your life, just like any kind of ceremony, right? It's, it's funny you compare it to ceremonies because humans, early humans would use music and campfires and dancing around the campfire and like coming together as a community to dance and, you know, And like enjoy each other's company in music as a ceremony. Like that truly was their ceremonies and that's pretty much gone from now.
Except for festivals, like that's where that's how it's evolved. To be the my brain is so dead. That's how it's evolved over the years now is like, that's our version of a of a campfire, you know, taking whatever substances that early humans would drink because humans were for sure drinking psychedelic substances. Yeah, you can be. A version of yourself you just can't normally be in daily life in a festival. It allows you to like, especially if it's a multi-day festival. To really just Detached from like your roles. You have the role of like being a certain, like, you're a brother, you're a sister, you're a daughter, right? You're like the person you are in your business, you're like whoever you are to your partner or like how your friends or society sees you and you have to, there's all these rules you got to follow where you're finally in a place where you can just play, right? And you can come back to yourself. I think how things are different is when I was young, I just couldn't wait to fucking do.
4:20Shifting attitudes toward substances
Drugs I just was so excited to do drugs, and now I don't like, it's kind of a secondary thing. And I also don't really. Need as much, like, I don't need like it to have a good time. It's like, the cool part, I guess as you get older, you can just kind of relax into it because you just don't really give a fuck as much. So you can just be. And if it's a really good festival, really don't need anything. Now, it's more fun to like be able to go deeper into the quote unquote, what I'm calling like a ceremony to be able to get those reflections and insights and kind of like clearing of all the just like gunk, but You don't need as much and like also what is the like thinking more deeply about the intention of like the things that you're taking and in the situations you're gonna take it or then you're like you're just you're like I'm taking just take anything and everything is like 8 in the morning somebody hands you a mystery drug and you're like, yeah, it doesn't matter.
Right? And then also Like packing better food, where before I was like, yeah, let me tell you how, how I used to festival. Now I'm very diligent about food, you know, you, you gotta hit your macros. So you make a point for that. But I remember I used to go to Paradiso Festival back in Washington, and I would bring zero food except for on the way there. I would stop at a Safeway and I would pick up they had these giant sandwiches. It was like, you know, a double foot long and they were 6 bucks and you know you're a broke 20 year old so like what a deal and I would literally just buy one of those sandwiches and that would last me the 3 days of the festival. wow. I mean, that's actually not too bad, because some people you see eating the craziest shit, like you're eating Doritos. While you're high, that's insane. I could do it. I could, I could, I could eat Doritos. I could do it, but I'm not gonna feel, I like my main thing is I wanna come out of the festival feeling better. Like I'm OK if I'm physically tired because you're gonna obviously be walking and dancing and doing so much more and you're gonna be a little sleep deprived, but I wanna come out almost like it.
It's like you're going into this spiritual fast. Like you're putting good things into you, good water, you're hydrating, electrolytes, like, if you are trying to eat good food, so when you do come back to your world, you start eating normal again, it's like you've reset yourselves, almost like you've done. You know, they say fasting is incredible for autophagy, right? And there's like a, I was in one ceremony and he said that the like the group leader was said that his teacher said that it's like weak body strong spirit. It's like you're intentionally pushing your body almost like with not eating as much and physically dancing a ton and right, like challenging yourself that you're like growing your spirit's energy more and then you come back once you've done that to reconnect. To strengthen your body with this new renewed spiritual connection. Yeah, and I think as you get older, you just learn to party smarter. Yes, yeah, take care of your health, take your supplements, hydrate, drink water, not just booze.
7:47Training deload before festivals
And you want to feel good. Like you said, you want to feel good leaving the festival. You wanna, you know, again, you'll be sleep deprived, your legs will be tired, your back's gonna hurt, but you're not dead for three days afterwards. Yeah. What I would suggest is stop lifting weights if you're someone who's like been lifting, right? Focus on, just like you're getting ready for a competition, you take that week before you compete and you bring the stress down in that week, about like 50%, and focus on mobility, recovery. If you lift, lift at like 50 to 70%, so nothing's fatiguing, so everything is regenerating and you Feel super good when you get there. So, then you can push your body, right? And then you'll have a really good time, right? You know, it's not gonna kill you to take, you know, a week leading up and a week leading after to take like some low weeks. If you've been training well most of the time, then that's a good time to take like basically a deload. All right, next question.
Ready. Next question, what was your most challenging psychedelic trip? And not ceremony, just like. At a festival, at a party, at a, at your house, could be a ceremony. What was the most challenging? If it was at a ceremony, that counts. What's yours? I can tell you mine, um. This was, this was actually at a festival. This was at the Oregon Eclipse Festival 2018. And you know how much I love my cocktails of different substances. And at this particular time, I had a few different substances rolling around in the old noggin and a couple of friends of mine and my partner at the time, we found this like quiet little spot in the in the woods. At night, and we found this little tree and we like kind of got under this tree to hang out and we were gonna do a DMT ceremony.
9:48DMT ceremony at Oregon Eclipse
So my friend had a DMT pen, and so we kind of passed it around. And with DMT you want to get like at least 3 good hits. To really blast off and Uh, again, I have like a cocktail of other things going on in my head. And so the 3rd hit that I take. I am leaning up against this tree, and I um I go into it. I just kind of blast off. And I'm I'm apparently like in my head I'm swaying like this. Like this is what I'm picturing. I'm kind of just like moving my head back and forth. Apparently in real life or what we would consider real life, I am flailing my entire body back and forth really, really hard and I didn't know that. So my friends kind of like grabbed me like, are you OK? I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm good. I'm good. And um, And then I start crying because I'm, I'm having this emotional experience. It's not bad. Nothing bad is going on. I'm just like an emotions coming up, so I start having some tears and then I open my eyes and I see all my friends are gathered around me and they're just staring directly into my eyes like daggers into my eyes, and it's, it's almost like you're dead. You're like that's really what it felt like. I felt dead and they were staring with concern because apparently I looked like I wasn't doing well, but in my head I was totally fine.
But they're looking at me like, are you OK? And, and they're asking me, are you OK? Like what do you need? And I'm trying to tell them that I'm good, but my mouth, it, it doesn't work. The connection is severed between my brain and my mouth, and I cannot say the words I'm OK. I'm trying to tell them telepathically, I'm fine. I'm totally fine. And they just keep trying to like nurse me back to health and I'm like, guys, I'm fucking OK. And I start getting pissed off cause I'm like stop tending to me, just live your lives like go away, just let me be in my experience right now. And you know, I've never had a quote unquote bad trip except one time I got very close, but this was challenging in the sense that I just wanted that empathy to stop, which is a weird feeling cause I should feel grateful that my friends are. Like they care about me and they want to help me, but I was really fucking pissed that they just wouldn't leave me alone and I still don't know what that's about. So there's something there I need to like work through and figure out. But yeah, it was a very odd, very odd experience. And then the other time I've had like a bad trip was I kind of felt like it snapped my brain, which was at the the other Eclipse festival. Funny, weird, something about eclipse festivals.
12:21Bad trips and challenging experiences
Now that I'm looking back at it and connecting the dots. Eclipse or the other one you went to when we went to Eclipse, Ohio, that one, yeah. Oh well, what happened? Wait, no, never mind. That was Ohio. No, I lied to you. Yeah, that was, that was, you came back and you literally were like I was, I think I melted part of my brains. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I haven't been the same since. Like you couldn't see on the screen or something, right? Yeah, if I looked at the screen for more than 2 minutes, I'd have a raging headache. Yeah, yeah, not good, not good for my line of work, right, yeah. It's funny thinking about it, it's like, it's not ayahuasca, it's not Again, even though very challenging certain things, but it's not in the ceremony space. Thinking about it, it's funny when you're talking. It's always been when I've been on acid. Hm. I have a couple of them. What, well, actually this one was an acid, no, it was acid. I was with My ex, because we were like, and she was my ex at the time too, and we're like, let's go, and we took a tab, half a tab, and we went to something at like Wamu that UFC put on.
And I started looping. I've only looped once. And I'd go into the bathroom and it was 4 different realities kept looping, just boop, boop, boop, and I couldn't tell. Like I'd be in the bathroom and all of a sudden I couldn't, uh, my memory would just go, go, go. And I'd come out and I would, I remember going up to the, the like stand, the, you know, food stand or whatever, and I'd try to talk. I could barely talk and I was loop and I was so. Anxious and I was like pissing my ex off, who was my ex at the time also, and I just, it wouldn't stop. It was so, it was so awful. It was just like I couldn't, I, I was like I, I couldn't figure out anything and I just was like started walking in circles and I'm like, oh, I need to calm down because I look insane and I'm gonna get arrested. Yeah, that's not good. Do you know what I mean? Like I started looking, I, I must have been like late twenties at the time, but as it started to come down, then it was pretty fun. And then the other time was actually, I think I took Acid with my sister and we went back to her house and this when she was like over in the U district.
14:29Acid loops and anxiety lessons
And there was some guy, I think he was like into her or something, and sometimes my sister's like really oblivious, she's like really intuitive and deeply like connected with like, you know, how people are feeling and all this, but we would go to her back to her house and we're like grew up with these like weird guy friends she had, and he was back there, and I think he was on acid too, but the energy was like, I was like. Feeling his energy is like, you know, when you get around somebody like, 00, this guy's freaking out and he wants to fight somebody. And it was just me, her, and him. And it was like he was jealous of me, and I could just feel this energy kept building like he was a, like any second he was about to just fucking fight me. And I was like, I really don't want to get in a fight while I'm on acid because this is crazy. But also like I can't figure out how to calm his energy down. It was like getting bigger, like any second he was like a bomb about to explode. And I was trying to tell, and my sister, I was trying to tell like my sister like quietly, but she's always like very, she's like, what? Like, so I'm like, I can't. Directly tell her because she's like she's like so oblivious she's like it's happy she's always happy on psychedelic she never has a bad time. I've never your sister has taken massive heroic amounts of mushrooms and been the most go in the craziest scenarios and you're like how did you do?
She's just having a great time dancing it off. If anything, psychedelics taking them over the years has taught me. Like it's helped me clear anxiety because it reflects to you like, oh, you're an anxious person. So you start like having to work on it and so like less and less and less because it makes you so anxious in the moment it pushes you overboard to the point where you're like, I need to figure out how to deal with my anxiety, I didn't even realize I had this much anxiety, so I need to work on it, right? And so it gets less and less. And I was like, I had to go on a walk and I took her on a walk and then I told her on the walk, but it was like, finally all the other people returned home, but it was like, it was the craziest feeling. It is wild. And then the other two times, the other time was like the last when we were at Clips Festival, I like started to like lose my mind when we went to the last bass stage before Mary was like, let's go on side quests. I was like, something about asset. I was like, I don't know, it like controls my mind in a weird way that I can't with mushrooms, I can see the thoughts usually. I could see the emotions, but like, OK, I gotta, but this is like, I don't realize thoughts are like going crazy, and I can't even get a hold of them, and I was like having an existential like, uh oh, I'm gonna, I'm gonna lose my mind. And I remember I went into like VIP side area and I started having this super long deep conversation.
16:54Needing permission to do your thing
And I get really awkward too, because you guys came up and I like didn't know how to introduce you and then I felt like I could feel everyone like he was feeling awkward and I'm like, then it started to freak me out anymore. Eventually finally settled. What I learned was when Mary finally said, go on a side quest, I realized the feeling was I wasn't doing what I just wanted to do. I was like feeling obligated, like I got to be with them, but I don't want to be with, like, I don't want to be in that crowd right now or like, but I didn't know what I wanted to do. It's so funny that she intuitively read that. Yeah, she's like read that on you. She's like, I feel like you need to decide what we do right now. Yeah, and when I finally just, and as soon as I was like given permission to just go do whatever I wanted, it went away completely. It was crazy, crazy, like completely the whole like, yeah, because your energy shifted so fast you were like, let's fucking go and then we went and we had the coolest adventure. Yeah, and I was like, oh man, what a crazy lesson. It's like you, I can't, that's why I like when you festival, you gotta be around people that just let you. I, that's why I usually don't go to like things with people because I don't want to have expectations put on me because I just can't do things. That's what happens. It's like, if you're not doing the thing that you feel like is best for you, it's like it makes it starts to make my skin crawl. But now being on acid, it's like so intensified that I'm like, it really holds up a mirror to all these little pieces of yourself.
But you, I couldn't realize it. I didn't know that was the thing. It's so funny telling people about because I know this about you. Like I know that you need to just do your thing, and I, and like, I've, I've trust in you. Like you're gonna be fine. Obviously, I'm not worried about Brent doing whatever, but like, like when my mom's in town and we, it's like say we all go somewhere together, she's like, well, what about Brent? Where did Brent go? We did, I'm like, don't worry about Brent. Just Brent's gonna, Brent is gonna Brent. He's gonna go over there and he's gonna come back. Just, it's just like, well, should we wait for him? Like, no, don't wait for him. If you wait for him, we're. You're gonna stay here forever. Just let him do whatever. He'll, he'll find us. I'll, yeah, I'll navigate back to like when you found me at the fucking that was my favorite moment. We're like, where the fuck is Brent? I just look into the crowd and you're wearing a mushroom sauna hat and I hear squeak, squeak squeak and I go squeak squeak, and you're watching like. A, a trans on a unicycleist was like the trans burlesque show or something because I just wandered in place. I expected to find Brent. Yeah, I just wandered into this like meow wolf crazy setup and this whole show started happening and there was literally a woman with a fucking baby sitting next to me. So funny. I was like, this is crazy.
19:15Festivals as playground for kids
That's, I, the cool thing like. Whenever I have kids They're for sure coming to festivals. Kids have to be at festivals. The lessons they're going to learn and the shit they're going to be exposed to, it just expands your horizon so much and fills, fills an adult with so much creativity. Imagine that for a kid. Like, what an insane playground to be at a fucking music festival for a five year old. It would also be such an interesting experience as a parent, like, yeah. Yeah, like having, yeah, like that would just be really interesting. Yeah, just being in that place, being in that environment, seeing how you be with them, like, obviously you're like watching over and whatnot, but it's like, I imagine you get to be much more free, especially if you raise the kid well and whatnot. And then if you could take a kid to the festival, you can take a kid anywhere. If a kid can go to a festival and learns how to be at a festival with his parents. He can do anything. He could travel the world, he could be in any kind of situation, he can handle himself. 100%. Yeah. So you do one more?
20:18Owsley acid story and overdose
OK, well, I realize now that that actually wasn't my most challenging. I actually have way more challenging ones. I don't know why that one came to mind first. So, I'll tell you this story. There's back in like the 60s, 70s, there were two types of acid that were really popular. One was called Orange Sunshine. They made a Netflix documentary about it, and Orange Sunshine was this magical. LSD that was so they called it orange sunshine because it it was orange, obviously it was on like a tablet and it was the most euphoric just glowing like the best acid you could possibly just imagine. It's like molly acid basically. Yeah, it was so good they made a fucking documentary about it. And There was another type of acid called Owsley, and Owsley was the name of the guy who was, I believe he was the Grateful Dead sound engineer, and he was also a chemist. And so we made this acid and it was also really popular, but it was the complete opposite of orange sunshine. If you imagine orange sunshine was like the light side of the force and alzy was like the dark side of the force. It was very strong, very potent acid, but it had this like darkness to it, this underground. How does it have different, I don't fucking know. I think it has something to do with like cause it's the same compound, lysergic acid diethylamide 25, but somehow the way it's processed or the, I, I don't fucking know, the way it's created.
It is different. It's like maybe like if you cook pasta with water from New York versus water from Austin, Texas, it's going to taste different because the minerals in the water. So like maybe it's something like that, like the way it's compounded gives it a different element. But yeah, acid can be the same chemical structure but feel completely different, which is, I don't know, beyond me. That's a chemist's question. But anyways, uh, my partner at the time sold acid allegedly. Allegedly, so she had gotten a vial of this owsley acid, and the way she got it was um. You know, it had been gone from society for so long, but Owsley had buried a bunch of vials in his backyard. And then when he got arrested, his house was raided. They like, you know, the DEA never found it. And then in like 2005 or something around that time. His family members had like gotten it out of the backyard and then re-released it out into the world and somehow my partner had gotten a vial of this owsley acid so we would do the owsley acid and it was really fucking powerful and one hit of this how would you describe it.
Like you are. Well, I'll tell you what happened and then that'll give you, give you some insight into what it was like, uh, but it's dark, there's like a darkness to it, not bad, but just like gritty. And uh and so she had this and one hit of this stuff was extremely strong, like you, you only need one. And so we go to this festival that I was actually DJing at, and um I finished my set and I was like, great, I'm ready to do some acid. And so She goes to drop the, it's it's a liquid, it's in a dropper. She goes to drop the acid in my mouth. Now one thing about this person is she had shaky hands. So I should not have trusted her to drop this onto my tongue because I said just one hit please and I feel tap tap tap tap. Oh my God. I'm like, uh, how many hits was that? She's like, um, 3 or 4. Oh my God. And at that point there's nothing you can do. Like you can't get off the roller coaster to, well, you got to flip your mind. Yes, well, there's nothing you can do to like turn it around. You just have to accept that you're now.
gonna go on the roller coaster. Yeah, and you got pushed out of the plane. There's no fighting it. Yeah, you're already falling towards Earth. So it's like, prepare yourself, just get comfortable, like get the things that you need, and then just strap the fuck in. And so. I'm like, all right, fucking here we go. Where are you? We're at this festival. Yeah, we're at the festival and it's, it was called. Lamp, uh, something music and arts festival. It was a tiny, it was like a little homie festival. And, um And it was super hot. It was like 100 something degrees that day, and um I started getting the come up poops. So I'm like it's time, time to get it out. And so I go, there's one porta potty that I could find in this whole fucking place and it's locked. There's literally a padlock on it and I can't get it. This whole, this festival is a shit show. It actually burned down after we left. A campfire or something, there was an ember and the whole place burned to the ground. Holy, it's an absolute shit show. So, uh, I I'm like, all right, I have to poop right now. So I run and I grab like paper towels and I just go find the spot in like a A, a, a, a plane, right? Like the planes, like this tall grass. I'm like, I have to poop here. This is it. And I start coming up so hard and I'm by myself in tall grass and there's people around just walking around.
I was just hiding, trying to like hide myself in the blazing sun. There's no trees to protect me. I'm just sweating absolute bullets trying to poop in the tall grass coming up on the strongest acid trip I've ever experienced. So that was rough and then it proceeded to be about an 8 hour journey and. This was an interesting trip because reality fully snapped. Like nothing made sense at this point. I remember there was this one moment where I'm barely holding it together and I'm walking with, with my partner and some friends and we're walking this way on a trail, and I see my other buddy who's walking towards us and He says, like, hey man, what's up, or he greets me. And I greet him back, but the time delay was so long that I thought I responded at a reasonable time, but the moment the words came out of my mouth, I realized he wasn't there and I was like, what the fuck? And I looked back and he was like, 50 or 60 yards behind me. I was like, what the fuck is going on? So time was just completely distorted. And we get to the point where like, I was like, I need to go be away from people. Like I just need my crew, like you, like my friend and my partner, like we just need to go somewhere. And so we go find the spot in the, like in the trees by this creek, and we go down there and I lay down and I'm just reeling like I'm going crazy. I'm not having a bad time. I'm just having a challenging. I'm just like on a roller coaster.
And there's, I see some spider webs, and the funny thing about acid is it will create new realities based on what you see or feel. So I saw one spider web, and from that everything was spider webs. I was covered in spiders just for that I was like I'm like I probably felt some bug on me or whatever, and I saw a spider web at the same time and my brain goes, you're now covered in spiders. Oh my God. I went, I like started rubbing my body all crazy and I fucking ran out of there as fast as I could. They're like, Tony, come back, and I was like, fuck these spiders are just running out of the woods. And, uh, yeah, and then we get back to the campsite and I'm like, oh, by the way, we never set up our tent. So like we need to set up our tent now and, um, don't do that, never do that. I've learned that lesson a couple of times. Take your psychedelics after you set up your tent. And so we go and I'm just looking at the tent now. And I'm like, I, I can't, I don't know. I'm just looking at a tent like on the ground and put together with the rods on top of it, and I'm like, I, I have no clue how to do that. You're like looking at hieroglyphics. I might as well have been looking at an alien spaceship. I was a Boy Scout. I've put down, I've put together hundreds, thousands of tents, and I'm like, this is alien technology. I don't know how to do this. So I'm just staring at it and my friend Ben recently passed away, rest in peace, comes over and he says, Hey man, what's going on? And I was like, bro, thank God you're here. Can you please help us?
Can you put, we need a huge favor. And I'm like begging him, and he's like, yeah, what like what? What do you possibly need? And I'm like, can you put the tent together? I'm too high. He was like, yeah, of course I can put your tent together, dude. No problem. So then he starts putting the tent together and I go sit like on the bumper of the car. And I'm just waiting and I'm sitting there silently, by the way. I'm not making a sound. I'm just absolutely silent just like watching him put together my tent. And like you said, you get anxious and I, and I'm like, oh fuck, and I go up and I talked to him. I was like, hey, Ben. Is it like, is this OK? And he's like, what are you talking about? I'm like, am I making a scene? Am I making a scene right now? He's like, What are you talking about? You're sitting on the car silently. I was like, I, I, I made this weird impending like I'm doing something's wrong. I'm doing something wrong. I'm a burden to everybody else. I'm saying that things are getting weird and you're like look at someone's facial expression, you can't tell what it is. You're like, are they mad at me? Do they hate me? Are they with me or are they against me? And so he's like, yeah, dude, you're fucking fine. You're just sitting there by yourself quietly. I'm like, OK, thanks. And I go, wait. And then he sets up the tent and he asked for some acid. I was like, yeah, of course, man. So my partner gives him some acid, gives him one hit, and like 2 or 3 hours later he comes back and he's like, I see why you needed me to set up your tent.
He was on 1 and he's like, I don't understand what's happening around me, and I was like, buddy, I'm on 4, like I have no clue who you are at this point.
